Chapter 17

Electronic Commerce: Let a Thousand Flowers Bloom

Chapter Summary

EDI and Electronic Markets have established their place and their utility in
the way business is done. Their effect has been considerable but not as all
embracing as some early theorists predicted.

Internet based commerce, just one of the many applications on the Internet,
is still at an early stage of development. It is set to become an important
commercial channel and its wide availability and diversity will ensure it a
developing role. However, as with other new forms of commerce, it too will
settle down as just one of a range of ways of doing business.

This chapter looks at all forms of e-Commerce in their wider commercial
context. It concludes that each way of doing business has a role to play
and that the road to competitive advantage, for many organisations, is in
the integration of appropriate e-Commerce technologies throughout the
supply chain.
